VT Flagship delivers state-of-the-art learning environments for Type 45 Destroyers

VT Flagship has won the Royal Navy contract to deliver modern e-learning environments for Type 45 Destroyer training. The facilities, located at HMS Collingwood and HMS Sultan, are set to provide the transformational learning platform required to deliver the bespoke courseware.

Eight state-of-the-art learning environments will be delivered to HMS Collingwood and HMS Sultan on a rolling programme culminating in May 2009. These facilities include three screen custom-built workstations for crew to access the interactive and technical elements of the media rich courseware. A further two pilot classrooms will be included in the five year IT support services element of the contract. The courseware is currently being developed by the Royal Navy Training Unit supported by the VT Flagship partnering arrangement.

Each classroom has been designed to the requirements of the instructor team, maximising the learning potential of the training modules that include warfare, power (electrical/propulsion), navigation and communications.

Junior and senior crew from the Type 45 complement will receive tailored and focussed  training in the new e-classrooms to equip them with the skills and knowledge to undertake  their on board roles.

Says Tara Gullett, Managing Director of VT Flagship: This contract provides a unique opportunity to develop our role in delivering cutting edge technical environments to the Royal Navy. We are keen to utilise the specialist ICT and training capabilities within VT Education and Skills to connect the advances being made in schools with the employer.

“These 21st century learning environments are set to deliver a significant part of the current and future requirements of the training programmes - in support of one of the most advanced warships in the world.”

Says Lt Cdr Paul Pine RN, Officer in Charge of the Type 45 Training Unit: “You wouldn’t think that the classroom is one of the critical parts of a multi-million pound training solution - but it is.  It is the environment where learning takes place and is critical to get right in order for trainees to gain new knowledge and develop new skills that enhance the Royal Navy’s capabilities on the front line.”
