VT inspires future engineers

VT Education and Skills supported an engineering event at Crookhorn College of Technology in February. ‘Tomorrow’s World’ aimed to ignite local schoolchildrens’ interest and future ambitions in an engineering career.

The diversity of engineering across the VT Group impressed the 500 schoolchildren attending the day. They met VT engineering teams across marine, automobile and global broadcasting disciplines as well as from VT’s successful engineering academy, responsible for running a number of key apprenticeship schemes for organisations that include Network Rail and BMW.

The Royal Navy School of Marine Engineering, the National Skills Academy, BVT and pneumatics automation manufacturer, SMC, also exhibited at the event.

“We want to inspire the next generation of engineers,” said Gerry Thwaites, Head of the Civil Maritime Academy at VTE&S. “Engineering is one of the most dynamic careers to consider, offering a plethora of industries and choice. This day is simply a taster of what the engineering world holds for today’s young people, and how an apprenticeship might just offer the springboard to a bright future.”

“Tomorrow’s World was a great day for students from our year 9 and local primary schools to sample the world of work,” said Graeme Sammons, Head Teacher at Crookhorn College of Technology. “For year 9 students, it was an excellent opportunity to talk with employers about careers in a wide range of fields and see the technology that currently underpins them.  Many of the exhibits were hands on and actively engaging for students of all ages.  Students get a great deal from experiences like this where they can see how the work they do in school is clearly linked to the world in which they live.”
